A Day in Abbey Road Studios

We were asked to produce a behind the scenes look at a recording session of a charity single in Studio 3, Abbey Road Studios. Using two cameras, we captured the process of recording a track along with the historical atmosphere of legendary recording studio.

Abbey Road Case Study

We were invited to Abbey Road Studios to film the recording of a charity song.
Our job was to document the day, and the set-up and the process of recording multiple instrumentalists and vocalists.

Due to the tight space and general speed of the day we opted to shoot hand-held, giving us the ability to move around freely, capturing the key elements as and when they happened. We also felt that going hand-held lent itself better to the documentary feel we were after.

Abbey Road is renowned as the studio in which the Beatles recorded both Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The White Album, and where Pink Floyd recorded Dark Side of The Moon. With these classic albums in mind we wanted to capture the historic atmosphere of the studio, focusing on the vintage equipment being used, married with the Studio's up to date recording techniques and software.

In the edit we augmented the vintage feel with sound effects, specifically some vinyl crackle and fuzz. For the look we used a vintage film grain and sporadic burns to bring the piece to life.

For the intro and outro graphics, we experimented with a retro style, settling on an emulation of vintage magnetic tape covers.

We were really pleased with the finished result and it was a pleasure being asked to work in one of the world's most prestigious studios.
